THE POWER OF SPEECH

Hardy Vallejos makes a living selling trinkets on the buses of Santiago in 2005. But a government announcement declares the end of his trade. Within weeks, Hardy and his colleagues organize themselves: over two thousand registered members will fight to keep their place in the new transportation system that is coming. Along the way, they adopt the tools of modernity: they must have a uniform, a corporate image, and learn to sell — now guild demands — convincingly, emotionally, and efficiently. Hardy rubs shoulders with officials, deputies, and authorities, but they only manage to postpone decisions. Then comes 2007 and Transantiago. The country has yet to change its image of precariousness, but Hardy and his colleagues have forever changed the way they think.
